Not needing to boot into vmware to ingest my camcorder files is a massive relief, but FlamingoHD could help out just a little bit more if it did the following two things:
1. Recognise which files have been transferred from a camera before, and allow deletion of files after copying. (oops technically two things there)
2. Add metadata. FlamingoHD doesnt even write the date created info into the mts files. That makes sorting them in finder, and other software a total nightmare.
2. I think you misunderstood.
Oops wrong place. Comment deleted.
FlamingoHD features
Hi there,
1. FlamingoHD does have a 'detect duplicates' setting which is supposed to ignore files previously imported and already in the library. This is controlled under Advanced Preferences, "Hide media already imported"
2. We do allow deleting of files from an Event. This is not possible if Flamingo is in 'Import' mode, so just make sure that no camera is attached when trying this.
3. Metadata is a focus for us in the next major release of Flamingo (due out around April all going well). AVCHD files have some data which we can make available and we will also add support for digital SLR photos, include things like aperture, shutter speed, ISO and so on. We are recording the 'date recorded' metadata from the AVCHD files in the database.
What specifically did you want done with the date created metadata from the AVCHD files? Current the treeview sorts by date added (rather than date recorded) but we have a change to the folder sorting underway also.
Thanks for the feedback and suggestions.

2. I think you misunderstood me. I meant that it'd be nice if the files got deleted from the camera as they were copied accross to the computer.
3. Currently the most urgent thing for me is to have the date recorded info written directly to the file's date created attribute. Without this, browsing and sorting the files in other software is impossible. Another useful feature would be if the files were named after the date they were recorded rather than than the rather abstract library I'd as is done currently.
Other ideas that might be useful would be if there were some way to add keywords to the files, and if the software could write all this info into some sidecar files. Either adobe' xmp format or mymovies's XML format would be great.
Flamingo stuff
2. OK - I see what you mean. We don't do this as deleting the AVCHD files requires re-writing of the index files which is quite complex. I haven't seen an AVCHD importing function that deletes clips from the camera, for this reason.
3. We currently just copy the files from the camera into the Flamingo library area, which gives them a timestamp of when the copy happened. We then store the date added and date recorded into the Flamingo database. We could alter the file timestamp to the date recorded easily enough. I'll add that to the feature list for the next minor release.
We don't currently modify the file name when importing, but again, this would be relatively easy to change. We'll look into this for the next minor release also.
We do have tagging (keywords) on the roadmap, but thats a little further out. Its a big UI change to handle keywords and we want to make sure we get this right. Most likely mid-year for this.
We do support a simple iMovie export function from Flamingo already, so are you asking that we also generate an iMovie project XML file also, containing keywords as required? This is quite do-able.
Thanks for the tip about XMP. We will soon be adding metadata support to Flamingo to support a large amount of media metadata, especially for digital SLR images. Exporting this metadata in a useful way will be an important as we will want to make image export to Photoshop and Aperture as easy step.
Progress?
I have been periodically dropping by to see if there is any news and it seems you guys will be releasing an update sometime this month, right?
Can you comment on any of the feature requests in this thread. How many of them got into the update?
Flamingo 1.5
Thanks for checking back.
Flamingo 1.5 is a major rebuild with almost no new functionality. Version 1.5 gives us a new base to build on and the first new features will start to surface in version 1.6.
Having said that we have the timestamp request and file renaming on the bug fix list for 1.5, so we expect to cover these in 1.5.
Features currently planned for version 1.6 and 1.7 include:
- Metadata support (EXIF, TIFF, ITPC) for photos
- Tagging
- RAW support
- Many, many minor improvements as requested by users over the last 12 months.
3. Great news on all fronts
3. Great news on all fronts there.
I was actually going to hold off using your program altogether if the date created attribute issue wasn't addressed (since it would be less labor intensive on my part to just access the camera as a usb device and copy the original files accross myself). But it's reassuring to know that you listen to our feedback.
That and the filename thing will make such a difference to my workflow.
I understand about the keywords thing. You'll not only have to introduce the ability to create them, but also have to make the feature usable by making it possible to filter searches etc. by them.
