Hello everybody,

can anybody tell me how to play AVCHD files on the Mac natively? I do not want to transform the files. I have tried VLC (nightly build) but this does not work properly. Any other possibilities?

Thanks a lot,

Gerse

Finally found an AVCHD player

After extensive research I found out, that this appears to be a much bigger problem than assumed.

Thank god I finally found a working AVCHD player: http://code.google.com/p/movist/

AVCHD playback

Hi Gerse,

we've tried everything to playback AVCHD files on the Mac. We've tried the following things on current release iMacs and MacBook Pros:
- VLC - plays the file, but has artefacts everywhere, crashes sometimes and never keeps up with the playback speed
- Roxio Toast (Elgato Player) - drops frames, locks up the computer, no good
- Apple's previewer when importing in iMovie - locks up computer, can't play back in real time

We also want a simple previewer in our products, but there is nothing out there that works. We've decided to create out own AVCHD previewer.

The ShedWorx AVCHD previewer will (does) play back AVCHD on everything down to a Mac Mini running OSX 10.4. It adapts to the current hardware to play as many frames a second as possible. This varies from 1 to 3 frames per second. Regardles of the frames per second, the frames are always 'real time' meaning that they are the right frames at the right time, not delayed.

We are calling this a previewer, since its not really a player as it only displays some of the movie's frames (i.e. it will look jumpy). Having said that, we think that it does the job.

The AVCHD previewer will be in Voltaic 2.0, due out in October this year.

AVCHD playback

Sorry for resurrecting an old thread like this but I'm using the Elgato Player in Toast Video Player 3 and I've had no problems with it (that I've noticed), very pleased indeed with the playback.

Source video is 1440x1080i from a HDR-SR8E. No interlacing combing issues at all in horizontal motion and no dropped frames.

It may be down to my platform but if you've got reasonably recent iMac or Macbook hardware it might be a solution for you.

Apologies if this is old news, I'm new here.

Lean AVCHD viewer needed on Macbook Air

I have purchased Voltaic (plus Flamingo and Revolver). Can I use the mentioned AVCHD previewer separately from Voltaic? If yes, where can I find it?

AVCHD previewer

We don't distribute the Shedworx AVCHD previewer on its own - its part of the apps for editing purposes only at the moment.

AVCHD playback on Mac

Prism plays them.

AVCHD playback on Mac

Prism plays them fine, FFMPFG converts, but does not play them.

It's working well!

How to work with Prism?

I downloaded Prism, but I cannot get it to play the AVCHD *.mts files on my disk.

Anybody a fresh (spring 2010) idea about which AVCHD player might work well with my (oldest version) Macbook Air? VLC unfortunately doesn't without very unpleasant jerkiness :-(

Prism plays my AVCHD .mts files

Maybe you should transfer your AVCHD .mts files to your Mac hard drive?

Just a thought since I just downloaded Prism after reading this
thread and it "reads" and "plays" all my AVCHD .mts files (and
except for some "interlacing" on a few files, and then, only for
a few seconds and seem to happen only when the subject is moving).

Otherwise, I was able to view most of my AVCHD files in real time. :)

FYI, I'm only using an entry-level MacBook with 2 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo processor,
and with 3 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM.
